2001: A Space Odyssey
FREE SCREENING! Kingston Film Foundation is proud to present the second film in our outdoor, Summer movie series. Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi epic is the blueprint for science fiction films. Written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, the film is considered one of the greatest of all time, and has been praised for its accurate depictions of space flight, its pioneering special effects, and its ambiguous narrative. This event will feature local food vendors, including Masa Midtown and Little Rye Bakehouse, as well as beer from local nanobrewery Kingston Standard. Each film starts at sunset, and is preceded by a short, original video introduction.

Time Bandits
FREE SCREENING! The final film in our outdoor movie series at Midtown Linear Park. Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits follows a young boy who is whisked away by a crew of time traveling thieves. Fantastic, whimsical, and charming, this is a great example of what children’s films can be, and highlights the wild, mad genius of Gilliam’s vision as a filmmaker. The film was financed by George Harrison and features performances from members of Monty Python as well as Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall, and other legacy English actors. This is an all ages event that will feature local food vendors, including Masa Midtown and Little Rye Bakehouse, as well as beer from local nanobrewery Kingston Standard. Each film starts at sunset, and is preceded by a short, original video introduction.

The Princess Bride

Adapted from the William Goldman novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is a timeless fantasy for all ages. This is an all ages event!

Qweird Cinema: Polyester
Tickets Available Here. Qweird Cinema comes to a close with John Waters’ Polyester. Proudly presented (as intended) in Odorama, scratch-and-sniff cards will be available at the door for your sensory pleasure. Polyester stars Waters’ muse Divine as the housewife Francine Fishpaw. An exploitative, outrageous parody of Douglas Sirkian “woman’s pictures”, here we get an adulterous husband, hellion children, and a cocaine-addict mother and the utter collapse of a white-picket fence family. Raucous, rambunctious, and rancid, the Pope of Trash brings our series to a bombastic close.

Qweird Cinema: The People's Joker
Tickets Available Here. Our third film in Rosendale Theatre’s Qweird Cinema series, featuring a Q&A with director Vera Drew! Drew takes the familiar structure of the superhero film and the ubiquitous mythology of Batman to tell a heartfelt, funny, satirical coming out story. The People’s Joker is a scathing breakdown of the superhero cultural-industrial complex and an earnest, personal story about identity, gender, and creativity. It highlights the opportunity that superhero films’ formulaic narratives offer when you are willing to subvert, skew, and utilize them to your own means. Drew’s film was stuck in a rights battle for two years after its initial premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, and we’re proud to present it as part of this series.

Battle of Algiers
FREE SCREENING! You wouldn’t be wrong thinking that Gillo Pontecorvo’s Battle of Algiers is a historical document. Blending documentary style film-making with the Italian “cinema veritas” ethic, Pontecorvo crafts a portrait of the actions taking by Algerian rebels against the French during the Algerian War with exceptional, realistic detail. With a mostly non-professional cast (many of whom actually participated in the events depicted), the film is a perfect example of cinema’s power not just to tell stories, but to relay facts that otherwise might be lost to history.

Qweird Cinema: Nowhere
Tickets Available Here. Kingston Film Foundation is proud to announce the second film in the Qweird Cinema series at Rosendale Theatre. Gregg Araki’s is Nowhere is the second film in his “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy”, films now recognized as lynchpins of the New Queer Cinema. Surreal, violent, and steeped in pop-art visuals, Araki described Nowhere as “Beverly Hills 90210 on acid.” The film features an ensemble cast of familiar faces including Christina Applegate, James Duval, and Ryan Phillippe.
